Pollution from illegal mining in Ecuador
Abstract
The overall objective of the research was to analyze pollution caused by illegal mining in Ecuador. The approach taken by the researchers to develop the method involved investigation, collection, and critical analysis of documents and bibliographic references, based on a methodical, rigorous, and in-depth exploration of various documentary sources consisting of peer-reviewed articles, laws, and agreements, describing the findings. The inductive-deductive method was also used. It was concluded that illegal mining in the Punino River has caused severe pollution, endangering the Kichwa people's access to services due to exposure to mercury, which has caused the community to suffer from serious illnesses. Despite environmental laws and constitutional rights, the Ecuadorian government has not implemented effective actions to stop illegal mining.
