Corruption and Its Impact on the Management and Reform of Ecuador’s Prison System
Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze corruption and its impact on the management and reform of the Ecuadorian prison system. Methodologically, the study employed a qualitative approach, as it focuses on the analysis of qualitative aspects; doctrinal, theoretical, and normative elements were utilized, given the in-depth nature of the research. The results have shown that staff shortages and prison overcrowding contribute to the violation of human rights, a situation that has been denounced in various reports by international organizations. The recurrence of these problems over time suggests the absence of effective policies on the part of the State to ensure decent conditions within prisons. In conclusion, the prison system faces serious structural deficiencies that compromise both the safety and rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty, failing to fulfill its role of social reintegration.
