Incarceration of Adolescents: Social and Psychological Impacts and Challenges for the Judicial System
Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the social and psychological impacts of incarceration on adolescents and the challenges faced by the judicial system. The methodology was based on a qualitative analysis aimed at exploring the experiences and perceptions of juvenile offenders through interviews, focus groups, and observations. The results indicated that adolescents deprived of liberty, their psychological and social harm, and the challenges of the judicial system present an alarming situation and call for attention and awareness in society due to the discrimination that may arise during reintegration into society, which could lead them to reoffend and even harm themselves. In conclusion, adolescents are psychologically affected by isolation, violence, and the lack of an appropriate psychological support environment, which contribute to the onset of disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress.
